Our Beginning
What began as a traditional sheep farm in the heart of the Hantam slowly grew into something few believed would succeed. Faced with the challenges of the harsh Northern Cape climate, limited water, and changing farming conditions, the decision was made to diversify into date farming, a crop better suited to survive and thrive in this unique environment.
The first date palms were planted in 2001. Developed through tissue culture in a laboratory in France, with mother material originating from California, the trees marked the beginning of a completely new chapter for the farm and the region itself.
At the time, very little information existed for growing dates successfully in the Hantam. Many of the methods used by other date farms simply did not work in our climate, soil, and water conditions. As first-generation date farmers in the region, years of research, planning, trial, error, and perseverance were required to develop processes suited specifically to our environment.
Our Approach
Over the years, the palms planted in faith slowly became orchards, and those orchards became the foundation of what Lounic Boerdery is today.
Today, that same environment has become one of the things that makes our dates unique.
The Hantam's hot summers, cold winters, dry climate, and naturally brackish water contribute to producing larger, softer dates with a distinctive flavour profile unique to this region. What many see as a harsh and unforgiving landscape, we see as home, a place of freedom, wide open spaces, quiet nights, dusty roads, star-filled skies, and the unmistakable smell of clean earth after rain.
Over the years, Lounic Boerdery has grown into both a date farm and packing facility, allowing our team to remain involved in every step of the process, from orchard to packing floor. Every date that leaves our farm reflects the qualities we value most: natural growing practices wherever possible, exceptional size and appearance, softness, freshness, and above all, a unique taste.
Rooted in the Hantam, Lounic Boerdery continues to grow with the same vision it started with, producing exceptional dates while remaining true to the people, place, and values that built it.
